A trail town at the edge of the mountains

Travelers Rest got its name the honest way. For a very long time it was a stopping place, first on old trails, then for drovers moving livestock and stagecoaches carrying families up to the mountains for the summer. Today the stopping place is the Swamp Rabbit Trail, which follows an old rail line up from Greenville past Furman and runs right along Main Street into downtown. Trailblazer Park hosts a Saturday farmers market in season, and the History Museum of Travelers Rest sits in a 1926 grocery building.

It is the north end of our service area, at the foot of the Blue Ridge, and the houses reflect that mix of small town and mountain edge.

Older houses near Main Street and Renfrew

Travelers Rest has a mix of older homes, newer subdivisions and custom builds. Before the trail, the big employer was Renfrew Bleachery, which opened in the late 1920s and closed in 1988. The mill site is now Millstead, a mixed-use redevelopment with a church campus and coffee roasting.

Older houses here mean the usual older-house work: peeling paint on wood trim and siding, porches that take the most weather, and plaster or old drywall inside that needs drywall repair before paint will look right.

New townhomes and custom builds

New building keeps coming. Magnolia Trail, a townhome community on Lone Cypress Street, broke ground in 2025, and small new communities like The Refuge sit within walking distance of the trail. Further out, places like Cliffs Valley have custom homes on bigger lots. Other neighborhood names you will hear include Glenview Park, Hillside Plantation, Kelley Farms and Woodfield Estates.

New houses bring new-house jobs: builder flat paint that scuffs, nail pops as the framing dries, and owners who want more color than the builder gave them. Our Performance level, Sherwin-Williams Duration Home, is the usual pick for halls and stairways. See interior painting.

Shade, damp and mildew

The biggest exterior issue in Travelers Rest is not sun. It is shade. Houses on wooded lots and hillsides stay damp longer after rain, and the shady sides grow mildew and algae, especially near the ground. Paint over that and it comes back through.

So the wash matters as much as the paint. We pressure wash, treat the mildew, let everything dry, and then spot prime and put on two coats. Tall walls take extra ladder work, and they come up on houses built into a slope. See exterior painting and fiber cement siding.

Planning around the weather

We would rather wait for a dry, mild stretch than rush a coat on wet wood. If rain is in the forecast for a scheduled day, we will call you and move it, and we will tell you why. You can read how we price before you call.

Closer to Greenville, we also work in Greenville, Taylors and Greer.

FAQ

Travelers Rest painting questions

Something else on your mind? Call or text 864-800-8275.

My house backs up to the woods and the siding has green streaks. Can you just paint over it?

No, and nobody should. Mildew and algae have to be washed off and treated first, or they come back through the new paint. Every exterior price we give includes a pressure wash and two coats, and we look hardest at the shady sides.

We just moved into a new townhome in Travelers Rest. What can we paint?

In many townhome communities the HOA handles the outside, so the usual jobs are inside: moving off builder colors, an accent wall, or the stairway and halls in a paint that wipes clean. Check your HOA rules for front doors before you pick a color.

When should I schedule exterior painting in Travelers Rest?

Pick dry, mild stretches and give the job some flexibility, since wet weather can push the start date. Our guide on the best time to paint an exterior in the Upstate covers pollen, humidity and the fall window.
